Help
Making questions, how pupils play, and running a game in class.
The CSV template
One row per question. The right answer has its own column, and the game shuffles where it appears, so you never keep track of letters. Fill it in with Excel or Google Sheets and save it as CSV, or copy the cells and paste them straight in.
| Column | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| question | The question, up to 120 characters. |
| answer | The right answer, up to 32 characters so it fits on a sail. |
| wrong1, wrong2, wrong3 | Three wrong answers. Every question needs all three. |
| difficulty | easy, medium or hard. Leave it blank for medium. |
| explanation | Optional. Shown when a pupil gets it wrong: a memory trick works best. |
- Every question has four answers, so true or false questions won't work.
- No "all of the above", "none of the above" or "both A and B": the answers are shuffled, so they stop making sense.
- The checker shows anything to fix before your questions go live.
Example rows
| question | answer | wrong1 to 3 | difficulty | explanation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What is the plural of mouse? | mice | mouses, mices, meese | easy | Mouse has an irregular plural: mice. |
| Which planet is closest to the Sun? | Mercury | Venus, Earth, Mars | easy | |
| Which word is a verb? The dog ran home. | ran | dog, home, The | medium | Ran is the action word. |

Turn the list below into a CSV file for a quiz game. Columns, in this order: question, answer, wrong1, wrong2, wrong3, difficulty, explanation Rules: - Every question needs exactly 3 wrong answers that sound believable to a Year 6 pupil - Answers must be under 32 characters - Questions must be under 120 characters - Difficulty is easy, medium or hard - Explanation is one short sentence a child can remember. For spellings, give a memory trick (for example "There is a rat in separate" or "One collar, two sleeves: one c, two s"), not a rule they need to look up - No "all of the above", "none of the above" or "both A and B" - For spellings, the question is "Which is spelt correctly?" and the wrong answers are realistic misspellings - Use UK spelling - Output only the CSV, nothing else My list: [paste your spellings, facts or topic notes here]
How pupils play
- Aim: pull back on the screen and let go to fire. A crosshair shows where the shot will land.
- Close counts: landing near a ship picks that answer. The right answer scores 1 point.
- Direct hit: hitting the right ship scores 2 points and sinks it.
- Spares: three per game unless you change it. A wrong answer or running out of time uses one, and the right answer and its explanation show. A shot that misses every ship also uses one, and gives another go at the same question. The game ends when the spares run out or the questions do.
- First game: a practice shot first, so everyone learns to aim.
Running it in class
- Join: pupils scan the QR code, open the link, or type the 6-letter code at the join page. They tap their name and check it's them.
- Whiteboard: open the whiteboard view on the classroom screen for the join code and the live leaderboards. Press Full screen.
- Try it yourself: play the game first. Your games never reach the boards.
- Rounds: a new upload, or changing a locked setting, starts a new round with fresh boards. Past rounds are kept on the assignment page.
- Mistakes: fix a wrong answer in the bank and every game is marked again. A game played under the wrong name can be moved on the Pupils tab.
